As a School Social Worker, I am fortunate to be able to collaborate with our school psychologist, Colleen Vandermeer. Attached are a few resources that could be helpful for any parent, teacher, and/or caregiver to assist in Avoiding Power Struggles and Providing Early Childhood Solutions courtesy of our School Psychologist/Independent Love and Logic Facilitator.
Take the time to "Turn Your Word Into Gold"! The Lions Club of Michigan provides free vision screening. Currently they are focusing on children 1-6 yrs. old. The screening involves a sophisticated digital camera that is more precise than what the Health Department uses. The screening takes only a few minutes and is designed to keep attention/focus for young children. The Lions are screening at some Head Start programs as well as community health fairs. In our Moderately Cognitively Impaired Program at Black Elementary School we play and learn. When we facilitate play with children they can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. Last week, MOCI students played "Archie's Bike Shop" with the school social worker to "fix" a bike using play tools along with social communication, sharing, turn taking and smiles! Another daily reminder that are 'Hands are for Helping'! Everyday Stress Busters for Parents

DIY Calming Jars. Fill the jar 1/4 full with hot water. Then add glitter glue and mix well. Add water to the top and add additional glitter to your liking. Add top and shake well. If you are satisfied with the pace of the falling glitter then hot glue lid on. International Brown Bag Lunches of Love will be making 5,000 brown bag lunches for the Homeless. They are seeking support in making notes. If you and your students/children would like to take part in this kind deed please print the template below and send cards to me before the end of September so that I can get them to the event.
This past summer, the opportunity to take an art class on the subject of Zentangle with my oldest daughter presented itself. The 90 minute class peaked our curiosity as I viewed this practice as something that could benefit me, my daughter, my students and their families. All ages levels, in a variety of settings, can create Zentangle art with potential improvement in the following areas:
